NEWS: Statement from Discipline & Safeguarding lead on parent behaviour at junior games

January 26, 2022

Over the past few weeks the EIHA have received a number of complaints concerning the behaviour of a minority of parents particularly at junior games around the country. These complaints have ranged from general poor behaviour such as abuse being shouted at children during games; applauding and cheering when a player is down injured; abuse directed at officials to the most extreme complaint where threats are being made to junior players.

These types of behaviour are unacceptable in any sport including ice hockey but even more so in a sport involving children.

With this in mind, the EIHA wishes to remind all parents that they sign a Code of Conduct with their club when they register their child to play and failing to follow the Code of Conduct and EIHA Rules can lead to action against the parents but ultimately their children being unable to play ice hockey.

The EIHA does not wish to prevent any child from taking part in organised sport but the “toxic culture” that appears to be developing needs to be stopped now for the good of the game.

EIHA Director Barrie Archer who is the lead for both Discipline and Safeguarding for the Association said: “It is sad to know that the conduct of a minority our parents is bringing the game in to disrepute and affecting the children playing the sport.

“Ice hockey is a family friendly sport and children should be able to enjoy playing the game without suffering or being a witness to such poor behaviour which we would not accept from the very kids playing the game.

“Where necessary the EIHA will support an investigation into any criminal behaviour and take action against those involved. It’s great that we support the children and young athletes with everything we have, but we have to do it in the right manner.”
