The Board of the English Ice Hockey Association has announced that one of its most dedicated and long-serving team members, Ms Val Wilkinson, will be taking a medical sabbatical from her duties. The decision comes after more than four decades of continuous service supporting the association’s operations and governance.
Val has served the EIHA in multiple roles over the years, most notably in the area of youth registration and liaison with junior clubs. Her commitment has been described by the Board as “nothing short of remarkable”. With such an extensive tenure, her absence is acknowledged to have significant impact, and the organisation has prepared measures to ensure continuity of her responsibilities during her leave.
The sabbatical is being taken on medical grounds, prioritising Val’s health and wellbeing. The association has stated that she made the decision after careful consideration, and that the period of leave is necessary to allow for rest and recovery. Specific details of the nature of her condition are not being publicly disclosed, in line with respect for personal privacy and confidentiality.
During the sabbatical, the EIHA Board has put in place arrangements to ensure the smooth operation of the functions Val normally undertakes. The association is ensuring that junior club secretaries and other relevant stakeholders are informed of interim arrangements, thereby maintaining service levels and support for membership, registration and development work.
In its public message the association expressed deep gratitude for Val’s decades of service, recognising that her contribution has set an example of dedication and professionalism. The Board also extended its best wishes to her and emphasised that “your absence will be felt deeply within our organisation … we eagerly await your return”.
The announcement emphasises that the EIHA values the many years of contribution made by volunteers and officials such as Val Wilkinson, whose often-unsung work underpins the delivery of ice hockey across England and Wales at all levels. The sabbatical serves as a reminder of the organisation’s commitment to the wellbeing of its personnel and to maintaining robust operational continuity. The Board respectfully asks all members and affiliates to support Val by giving her the time and space needed for full recovery, and to uphold the culture of mutual respect that the EIHA strives to nurture.
