Release from Coventry Phoenix WIHC

Earlier this season five clubs in the south of the country decided they wanted to play some competitive development games for players who train and get some ice if they can but might not be first on the game sheet – yet! The idea is simple: training works but game time is invaluable.

These teams – Slough, Coventry, Streatham, Solent from Division 1 and Milton Keynes from the Premier – decided on a format, pulled a schedule together and the inaugural game of what is becoming known as the Women’s Development Challenge Competition took place on December 29.

MK traveled to the Phoenix barn and eventually left with the W in what was a close and evenly matched game 5-6.

Coventry fielded a brand new (this season) NM who had never before faced a competitive environment coming away with an impressive 94.7% save ratio – well done Ellie Jo Cole. Billie Thacker in her first competitive women’s game came away with the hat trick, pretty impressive stuff, and Victoria Weaver had a hat trick of assists in a game that saw her in her first full game, not to forget Lucy Farestvedt netting for her first late in the game.

It was a great game with the play flowing one way then the other, but MK just edging it. The second period was the goal fest with seven of the 11 goals being scored during the period.

More to follow but if this is anything to go by the real winner today was #womenshockey!
