Peterborough Phantoms or Sheffield Steeldogs will lift the first NIHL silverware of the season on Friday night as the Autumn Cup Final second leg takes place (at PI Peterborough, 7.30pm).
The two sides skated to a 2-2 tie in the first leg in Sheffield nine days ago and will play to a finish on Friday to decide a winner – including overtime and penalty shots where necessary.
Peterborough have the home advantage for the second leg, which looks like it will be a sell-out at the Bretton rink, and they are currently riding high at the top of NIHL South 1 with 16 wins from 18 league games so far. They were also the top seed from the group stage of the Autumn Cup with five wins from the six games played.
Sheffield had two wins in the Autumn Cup group stage to finish second in the North section, but like their opponents are top of their division in league play, with a perfect 13 from 13 wins.
Head to head this season couldn’t really be closer.
Sheffield won the first game on September 29, edging a 2-1 decision at Peterborough backed by Dmitri Zimozdra’s 35 saves from 36 shots faced. Twenty four hours later, Peterborough had their revenge with an overtime win at Ice Sheffield. Glenn Billing potted the winner at 64.01 to give Phantoms a 3-2 success.
The third game between the sides this year was the Final first leg at Ice Sheffield.
Ashley Calvert netted a brace in the middle period to put Steeldogs up 2-0 and the lead held until the final six minutes when Glenn Billing and Ales Padelek scored just 19 seconds apart to level the tie and set up the thrilling second leg.
The game is at 7.30pm on Friday at Planet Ice Peterborough.
