There were no match penalties assessed in the games last weekend, however there is one incident from NIHL South 1 that has been subject to a disciplinary review.

The incident was in the first period of the game on Sunday February 22 between Streatham IHC and Solent Devils.

Using video and officials’ reports the following has been determined:

As play moves up the ice there was a delayed penalty signalled by the referee and there was a coming together behind the play between White #10 Brandon Miles and Black #8 Alex Cole.

The two players appear to have hold of each other during which White #10 loses his stick and then proceeds to throw multiple punches to Black #8. Once they both fall to the ice, he stops throwing punches as a linesman arrives.

This should be a Match Penalty to White #10 Brandon Miles for Fighting, as Black #8 is an unwilling combatant.

IIHF Rule 141 states that a Match Penalty for Fighting is assessed to “a player who repeatedly punches an opponent during game action, after a whistle or any time during the regular course of a game during a prolonged player confrontation”. The key here is that black #8 at no point wants any part in the fighting actions.

In the next moment, it can be seen that White #10 Brandon Miles grabs hold of Black #33 Ralfs Circenis and drags him to the ice.
While on the ice, White #10 is over the top of Black #33 and can be seen to throw at least one punch to what appears to be the back of the head area of Black #33.  As Black #33 is face down on the ice, he will have been unaware of the punch and force about to be used.

This should be a Match Penalty to White #10 Brandon Miles for Fighting.  Black #33 is an unwilling combatant and at no point wants to engage with White #10.

IHUK In House Rules states that “a Match Penalty plus any other penalties will be assessed to any player who, in the Referee’s opinion, delivers a single or multiple blows to an opposition player who is unaware of that player about to use force”.

This video then shows Black player #33 is kneeling on one knee on the ice behind an altercation already in progress.   White player #22 skates towards him and throws a single punch to Black #33’s head.   Black #33 is in a vulnerable position and is unable to protect himself from the blow to the head.  Black #33 does not retaliate in any way.

This should be a Match Penalty to white #22 Adam Wood for Fighting.  Black #33 is an unwilling combatant.

IHUK In House Rules states that “A Match Penalty plus any other penalties will be assessed to any player who, in the Referee’s opinion, delivers a single or multiple blows to an opposition player who is unaware of that player about to use force”.

In summary, Streatham’s Brandon Miles receives two match penalties for fighting, and Adam Wood receives one match penalty for fighting.

Brandon Miles is suspended for four games on each of the match penalties, with 5 penalty points for each offence.  These penalties, along with another major penalty has passed the threshold for 10 and 15 penalty points.

Under the totting up process, Miles is suspended for 2 games at 10 points and 3 games at 15 points.

This makes a total suspension for Brandon Miles of thirteen games.

Adam Wood is suspended for four games for his match penalty with five penalty points.  This takes the player past 15 penalty points for the season, so Wood is suspended for an additional three games under the totting up process.

This makes a total suspension for Adam Wood of seven games.

Streatham IHC have been fined for reaching 40 and 50 penalty points this season, while coach Terence England is suspended for two games after the team reached 50 penalty points.
