The NIHL Championship Series was to be the culmination of the 2019/20 National Ice Hockey League season, with five events over three weekends in April.

Sadly due to the COVID-19 outbreak the events in Widnes, Alexandra Palace, Bracknell, Sheffield and Coventry were postponed and could not be played at their originally scheduled time.

Since the joint suspension of play statement on March 16th the NIHL management group have been in discussions with parties involved on the next steps for the events. While it was clear that there was an appetite from some quarters for the events to be played at a later date, the EIHA were keen that any resolution had to involve the option for those who had purchased tickets to receive a refund.

We are grateful to our venues and event organisers for working to facilitate this in challenging trading circumstances.

EIHA director Andrew Miller said: “It is disappointing that we did not get to celebrate the end of our NIHL season as we had hoped. The league would like to thank the supporters from all five divisions for their patience and forbearance while we worked through the next stage of the events with our venues.

“The chance to begin a new season with some kind of showpiece events is an attractive one but we had to be mindful that not all fans could leave their money in tickets for an event possibly several months in the future. I would like to thank all of our organisers and venues for arranging the refunds for those who want them.

“We hope everyone is staying safe, protecting themselves and their loved ones and we look forward to meeting again in a rink for the next fix of NIHL ice hockey.”

NIHL National Division

The NIHL National clubs have issued their own statement about the NIHL Final Four in Coventry, which is reproduced below.

The ten clubs of the NIHL National League and representatives of the EIHA have been having regular conference & Zoom calls to discuss the way forward for the League and Play Offs.

Firstly, we’d like to pay tribute to all those people from within the NIHL National League ice hockey family who are classed as key workers. Supporters, players, officials, owners or a loved one of a supporter, player, official or owner are on the frontline every day currently risking their own lives for others whilst fighting this deadly virus. We thank all of you for the services you are providing.

In these unprecedented times as a league we are in discussion with the Skydome Arena and the EIHA with regards to the Final Four weekend and will be offering a tournament weekend in Coventry as a season opening celebration. The event details will be released following the 7th May Government announcement with regards to the current lock down and what further social distancing measures are put in place. This also follows the information released by Ice Hockey UK and the EIHA this week.

We can confirm that all ten clubs are committed and planning for the 2020/21 season and reviewing both governmental and scientific advice on when the ice rinks can re-open and what measures we need to be put in place for the league programme to commence.

Once again, we thank the fans thank for your patience and understanding in these difficult times and urge you all to stay safe.

Information for ticket holders

It is hoped that fans will want to use their playoff tickets for the season opening event but any fans who’d prefer to have a refund can do so by using the email refunds@planet-ice.co.uk. However, due to consumer law it will only be possible to refund tickets bought online, as tickets bought in person or over the phone will need to be refunded by the venue directly, something that will not be possible until the site is able to operate reception services. Tickets will not be refunded automatically. Refunds will start to occur from the 4th May however Planet Ice would ask for customers understanding and patience as there is only a skeleton staff available at Head Office to process the refunds and so the process may take a few days. Please remember to include all your details when applying for a refund.

NIHL North Division 1

Ice Sheffield have already processed refunds for those who purchased tickets to Moralee Finals (North 1).

NIHL South Division 1

The organisers of the Britton Finals (South 1) have published a statement confirming refunds for online sales have been processed and in-person buyers are being contacted.

We’re pleased to confirm that everyone that purchased tickets via the TicketCo UK Website or Mobile App, your refund has been processed today and should reach your account within 2-3 working days.

If you have any queries, please contact TicketCo at support@ticketco.uk.

For those that purchased tickets in person & paid by Debt or Credit Card, you will be contacted separately to arrange your refund.

NIHL North Division 2

The Laidler Finals were due at Widnes and Planet Ice have been able to confirm the process for getting refunds for the event.

Fans who require a refund for the event should email refunds@planet-ice.co.uk however due to consumer law it will only be possible to refund tickets bought online, as tickets bought in person or over the phone will need to be refunded by the venue directly, something that will not be possible until the site is able to operate reception services at Planet Ice, Widnes. Tickets will not be refunded automatically. Planet Ice would ask for customers understanding and patience as there is only a skeleton staff available at Head Office to process the refunds. Please remember to include all your details when applying for a refund.

NIHL South Division 2

For the Wilkinson Finals at Alexandra Palace we are in discussions on how and when refunds can be issued and will advise supporters as soon as this is confirmed.
