This weekend over 400 players, dozens of coaches plus hundreds more family, friends and supporters will descend on Sheffield for the 23rd EIHA Junior Inter Conference Tournament – the Conference Weekend for short!

Now in its third year at Ice Sheffield, this edition is the first since the death of Conference founder Bob Wilkinson who passed away in February.  No doubt Bob and his legacy will be remembered throughout the weekend, but for those who still have not experienced Conference – what’s all the fuss about?

FI002

All season players at u11, u13, u15 and u17 trial for their region or conference sides until the final squads are named some time after Christmas.  These squads are the best of the best that each Conference has to offer.

There are five Conferences – four in the EIHA system which are Northern, Midlands, South East and South West.  Teams picked by SIH-UK also attend to represent Scotland.

Each age group is a five team round robin so there are FORTY group games across the weekend.  Games are 3x15min period where the first two periods are running clock and third period is stop clock.  On Monday afternoon the top two teams in each age group contest the grand final – giving a grand total of FORTY-FOUR games.

In addition on Saturday afternoon there is an official opening ceremony when all 400+ players are welcomed to the ice in front of a generally full house.  Post games on Monday there is also a medal and closing ceremony making the whole weekend a truly special occasion.

To accommodate everything in the long weekend the games begin at 7.00am – yes that’s in the morning! – each day.  Sixteen games plus opening ceremony on Saturday.  Eighteen games on Sunday.  Six games, four finals and a medal ceremony on Monday.

For any hockey fan I’d say Conference is a ‘bucket list’ item – every hockey fan should do at least one.  These players will grow up to be the stars of the future for club and country.  And that’s no idle boast.

Of the 23 players who won gold for Great Britain all except four (three non UK trained, one a year too old) came through Conference.  Some are now putting their own children through Conference.

If you’re looking for any hockey fix this Bank Holiday weekend – one, two, three days it’s up to you – but if you visit Conference you won’t regret it.
