It may be the middle of the off season for many who play or follow teams across the EIHA, but this weekend in Cardiff players, friends and families will gather at Ice Arena Wales for the 2017 edition of the UK Charity All Star Weekend.
Founded in 2008 the event has grown in size and stature, this year supporting ten charities in total with two Pro All Star teams kicking the event off on Friday night before eight teams battle across the weekend for the tenth-anniversary title.
The Pro All Stars is a new addition to the event, a special evening to launch the tenth anniversary All Star weekend. Teams captained by Ian Cooper and Max Birbraer will support the Ice Hockey Players Benevolent Fund and Special Care Infant Parent Support at University Hospital Wales. The teams are filled with current and former pro players from across the UK. Full roster detail can be found on the All Stars website.
The main event of the weekend is the All Star tournament with teams supporting eight charities – Ty Hafan, Blue Cross, Help For Heroes, Breast Cancer Care, British Heart Foundation, Welsh Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer UK and Dreams Come True – play out a round robin schedule with the ranking and medal games taking place on Sunday afternoon.
To date the UK Charity All Stars have raised over £421,000 for charity with in excess of £106,000 this year alone – the most successful year yet.
Allstars chairman Paul Sullivan said: “Each year we try to think of how we can surpass the previous total, each year it gets more and more difficult, so to achieve a record total so early is just breathtaking.
“We had a sense for some time by monitoring the fundraising that we could beat last year’s total before the weekend itself, but never thought it would be done so soon.
“The total so far doesn’t include ticket sales, jersey sales, raffles or any fundraising on the actual weekend. This is all from the efforts of the Allstars players, sponsors and partners.”
The 2017 Allstars weekend begins on Friday 28th July, 7:30pm with a Pro Allstars game of current and former pro Ice Hockey players, and then the main tournament itself is played out on Saturday and Sunday from Midday, all at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay.
Tickets for the Friday are available HERE and from the Arena in person, priced £10 adult and £5 for children and concessions. Entry for the weekend can be bought on the Friday night, and on the door over the weekend. Admission is £3 per day or £5 for both tournament days.
For any other queries please email info@UKcharityallstars.com or visit www.ukcharityallstars.com where online donations can be made by those unable to attend the weekend in person.
Everyone at EIHA would like to wish all players, volunteers and supporters a successful weekend and congratulate them on their fundraising efforts, this year and in the ten years of the Allstars tournament.
