Hot on the heels of the Power of Ten event at Ice Sheffield last week, the JLMC have another big event taking place in the New Year on 2nd and 3rd January when the first Junior Winter Classic will be held. Teams from the Conference programme will be taking to the ice at ice Sheffield in a new style competition which has been designed to give the Conference teams more competitive games ahead of the 2017 Conference Tournament which this year takes place at the end of May.
It’s certainly been a busy time for new initiatives coming out the EIHA’s Junior Section and this new style tournament is no exception as it builds upon the work being done at the grass roots end of the juniors which has recently targeted U9’s and most recently Under 11’s.
Using the splash title “Winter Classic” the JLMC is hoping to make this an annual event which will provide the Conference teams with additional challenge games so that the players elected will gain more experience and greater exposure to the EIHA’s Elite Player Pathway on their road to selection trials for the England National Team Programme.
This first event over two days and being held at ice Sheffield will feature U13 and U15 teams and JLM Chair Jacqueline Pye is hoping for another successful event both on and off the ice. Like with all of the elite pathway events, fitting-in tournaments and challenge games is always a difficult task due to logistics and league match schedules. But with this event taking place mid-week it is hoped that all of the teams involved will be able to ice their full rosters and give the tournament a great kick-start as well as welcoming in the New Year in traditional Winter Classic style.
The U13 event takes place on Monday 2nd January starting at 7am and with games every hour until the final scheduled for 5pm. The U15 event takes place on Tuesday 3rd January with the game schedule following the same format and timings as the U13 event.
Our u13 Winter Classic features all five Conference teams – North, South East, Midlands, South West and Scotland. The tournament will be a full round robin with games being 3x15min periods. First two periods are running clock, final period is stop time.
The u15 Winter Classic features Conference teams from North, Scotland and South West plus the EIHA Power of 10 u16 squad.
Spectators are more than welcome to join the Winter Classic, admission at Ice Sheffield is free of charge.
