The EIHA’s Goalie Programme – under the watchful eye of Technical Director Euan King – held its latest event last week to improve the level of goalie-specific coaching available for what is arguably the most technically demanding position on the ice.

Colin Grubb, a coaching education presenter from USA Hockey, delivered a ‘Coach The Coaches’ workshop in Sheffield, giving more than two dozen coaches from all over the country a classroom theory session followed by on-ice practical.

Grubb, a goalie with Fife Flyers and Solway Sharks in the late 90s and early 00s, now resides in the US and works with USA Hockey on their goalie programme. He said: “Goaltending is critical to a team. It can be developed by all coaches, not just specialised goalie coaches.

“This clinic gave the coaches an understanding of the position and most importantly the confidence to actively coach the goalies in their clubs.

Euan King said: “The goalie programme in the EIHA continues to go from strength to strength, and this latest event was another great success. We’re grateful to Colin Grubb for his work with our coaches, it was great to see him back in the UK and giving his knowledge and experience to our group.”

The next GK1 Goalie Coaching qualification takes place in Sheffield at the end of this month. For details and more on the EIHA Goalie Programme, visit the education pages on the EIHA website:
