The English Ice Hockey Association have been informed by Manchester Phoenix IHC that they are unable to complete their fixtures in the English Premier Ice Hockey League (EPIHL) for the remainder of the season and have withdrawn from the competition with immediate effect.
Phoenix joined the EPIHL in 2009 and were league champions in 2010-11 and 2013-14, while also winning the end of season playoffs in 2012-13.
The club endured a turbulent last two seasons, playing out of Deeside and Blackpool before their last two home games at Widnes Ice Rink.
A statement issued on the Phoenix website last night said: “We are saddened to announce negotiations with a potential investor have failed, and the club will need to withdraw from competition immediately.
“The Phoenix has also confirmed the club is unable to complete the remainder of the season due to a significant budget shortfall.”
EIHA Chairman Ken Taggart said: “It is always sad when a team has to cease operations, the fans of Manchester Phoenix will feel it more than most. They have been great supporters of their club throughout their time in the EPIHL.
“As a club at their peak Manchester played fast, skilful, exciting hockey which won them two League championships and a Playoff title. That’s the hockey that fans should remember, and that the EPIHL will miss.”
