The latest report from Kisakallio, Finland, where England u14 girls are in the middle of their week-long stay.
A very early start on Tuesday, we were up as the birds went to sleep!
After breakfast and warm up, the team were introduced to Lari Joutsenlahti who is one of the best skating coaches in Europe. Yesterday he was working with Teemu Pulkkinen who plays for the Detrioit Redwings. Today he ran the on and off ice session with England girls, what an experience!
Lunch and then today’s activity which was curling… very interesting and great fun – well it made the staff laugh!
We spent the afternoon running over defensive systems and shift lengths in the most realistic way we could – on the sports field, luckily the sun shone all the time.
Later after dinner it was back into game routine. Today the girls played Illves Tampere and the team showed a great improvement and dominated the opening period coming in at the break 3-0 up.
Tampere came back in the second and the game became end to end but it was England who again took advantage adding another two goals, leading 5-0 at the end of the second.
The girls stepped up again in the third adding another four but with 18 seconds left Tampere scored after a break down in the team’s system – something to work on tomorrow!
With the 9-1 win the girls celebrated with the odd bowl or two of rice krispies (part of their evening snack) and then to bed for a well deserved sleep.
At least tomorrow we have a lie in – 07.25 start!
