EIHA COACH RECERTIFICATION

Coach education is an ongoing process throughout a coaches’ life and it is important that coaches keep up to date with technical and tactical developments as well as the generic requirements of coaching.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD opportunities provide a means to broaden skills, stay up to date with changes and become more effective as a coach. The EIHA Recertification programme addresses these three key components:

Knowledge: refers to the information relevant to the coaching activities.

Training: refers to activities that guide the individual to apply their gained knowledge in practical situations.

Experience: refers to activities that are conducted during the individual’s coaching and which contribute to the enhancement of the quality and effectiveness of the individual as an active coach.

HOW RECERTIFICATION WORKS

After qualifying coaches must continue to update their coach education or have progressed to the next qualification level to maintain their licence.

EIHA Coach Recertification is on a 3 year cycle:

All coaches must complete at least 3 hours of coach development training within their 3 year recertification cycle to maintain their certification – this is the minimum requirement and coaches are encouraged to undertake as many training opportunities as possible.

CPD Points:

Coaches must attain a minimum of 15 CPD points within a 3 year cycle to recertify. These points can be earned from the range of activities, as detailed in the Recognised CPD Activities table.

CPD training can be completed at any time during the 3 year recertification cycle. To ensure continued registration coaches are advised to plan their CPD so that they are up to date before their licence is due for renewal.

  1. Complete your chosen CPD activities
  2. Submit your completed CPD application and evidence for approval
  3. Once your CPD application has been approved you can register to coach

RECERTIFICATION OPTIONS

CPD points can be earned from a variety of activities. In addition to the existing Ice Hockey specific and UK Coaching recertification options, the EIHA now accepts a range of different coach development opportunities; including self-guided study, some CPD coaching workshops from other sports and some eLearning development opportunities, as well as experience gained through Mentored coaching activity and active ice hockey coaching – see the Recognised CPD Activities table below for details of approved CPD activities.

The new EIHA CPD options include traditional coaching qualifications, courses and workshops, but also eLearning and self-guided study – giving coaches a range of exciting development opportunities.

You may choose to attend workshops and courses, or use a “pick and mix” of the available CPD options. Coaches can choose a range of short bite size activities to complete their CPD. There are very good coach education resources being developed in a range of sports – many have key elements that are about coaching craft and can be applied to any sport – helping the coach develop their technical abilities (what to coach) and understanding and application of the coaching process (how to coach). However you choose to learn and grow as a coach, only CPD that is approved by the EIHA and that has been completed within your current 3 year recertification cycle will be accepted.

GUIDANCE NOTES

The Application for Recognition of CPD Activities form provides a means for coaches to gain recognition for CPD that is done using means other than through EIHA events. Other development and training from the list of Recognised CPD Activities can be recognised. For example it could be used to record and recognise training completed through Mentored Coaching and eLearning activities.

COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FOR RECOGNITION OF CPD

For an application to be considered the coach must complete Sections 1, 2 and 3 and sign the declaration. Please provide as much detail as possible to enable us to understand what you have been doing. Please enter accurate personal and contact details in Section 1 to enable us to record your CPD correctly and contact you about your submission if necessary.

WHAT ACTIVITIES CAN BE LOGGED USING THIS FORM?

Training courses, mentored practice and self-lead study are some examples of activities which coaches might undertake as part of their ongoing development and can be logged in Section 2.

WHAT ARE DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMES?

For each record of development you will need to identify the learning objectives of the activity i.e. what were you aiming to learn or develop by taking part in the activity. For Section 2 the development outcomes should show progression of the coach’s technical abilities (what to coach) and understanding and application of the coaching process (how to coach).

WHAT EVIDENCE CAN BE USED TO VALIDATE THE RECORD?

For active coaching to be recognised (1 CPD point per year) EIHA/SIHA registration is required for years being claimed as well as evidence such as coaching logs that are witnessed and signed off by your Club Head Coach and official documents such as copies of game sheets where you were a team coach. For other training and development; Certificates, a relevant reference and confirmation from the training leader, Expert Witness testimony, video, photographs and screenshots are some examples of evidence that can be used to support the Application for Recognition of CPD.

When completing Section 2 please identify the evidence that will be used for each entry and submit these together with the form.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Send completed applications and supporting evidence to:

Liz Moralee – EIHA Education Programme Administrator        email: coachprogramme@aol.com

Coaches are advised to allow time for CPD applications to be processed. Please note that submitting an application for recognition of CPD activities does not mean a coach can then immediately register.

Each application is reviewed to ensure that the content supplies acceptable evidence of development. If it meets the requirements, the coach will be notified and they will be able to register.

CPD claims that do not meet the requirements will be rejected and the coach will not be able to register at their current level until the recertification training requirements have been met (see the current Coaching Protocols for full details).

If they have not met the minimum CPD requirements they will be notified that they need to complete additional development activities before they can register.
